Is testing job gender specific?

My perception on this is its not gender specific. Let me know yours.
I have heard many people saying testing job is good for girls. Many people in IT stream suggest freshers (especially girls) to get into testing job saying its easy and risk free. Is this true?
In my opinion it is not true. Might be true on one point - girls will have more creative thinking. So girls might suit well in this stream. Whereas, every individual will have different negative thoughts, so testing mainly requires negative thinking in a creative way to destroy an application. Thus i would say its not gender specific.

@Deepthi,
Welcome to bloggers world of Testing.

Good post. I have heard it from some people talking the same way as you said that it's suitable for girls and is a easy job. I oppose and educate them on it saying, "It's is not a easy job". I say, that testing and developement are equally challenging and needs more skills than developers.

Skills include,
1. Observation
2. Bug Reporting
3. Communication
4. Bug Advocacy
5. Lateral Thinking

The above list is too less.

Some people say, "I want to join testing because I am not good at coding". I reply to them calmly that, "If you have this thought and want to join testing then you can't do a good job nor grow in your career". Testing involves coding ( Automation testing - writing javascripts, creating framework for the test team and more languages depending on the product ).

Testing is not gender specific. Males & Females both have brain and it is skill specific is what I would say.

Good post as this talks about educating those people who talk non-sense probably they are not properly guided.

Looking forward for more posts :)

Thanks,

Hi Deepthi,

Welcome to Blogosphere. Good to see you write on an itchy topic at this juncture of time :)

Believe it or not, its not just girls, but guys as well who think testing is a 9-5 job. Testers don't need to code, they don't need to think, they don't need to collaborate with other teams in late night meetings/calls, they can work in absolute silos - all heavily faked myths.

People who believe in these myths are people who work like robots without using their brain or any other skills, do whatever is told to them blindly, wrap up tasks in 8hrs time and rush back home. There was a colleague who always told me 'Anyway, this is not my family's product'. I often felt like asking 'Would you do the same thing if you were running that business and worked with a person who said this to you?'.

Trust me, I have seen many girls and guys doing this in testing field. It is also this people who spread bad and wrong things about the testing craft.

Fortunately, the world is also made of people who spread good and right things about testing. I welcome you to that world ;)

Happy Blogging,
Parimala Shankaraiah

Hi Deepthi good to see your blog and really you started up with a nice post.

I strongly say that testing is not at all gender specific and it is not an easy task too, testing need a lot of knowledge and command on product and it is a risky job.

As Santhosh said a tester also should have at least a basic knowledge on coding to sustain as a good tester “Finding NEMO puzzle” by Pradeep Soundararajan is one of the best example for that.

Looking forward to see more intrusting posts from your end.

Thanks

Any job (for that matter) is not gender specific. Every gender is given equal respect in every cadre of this world.

We can see live examples [and in history too :) ] in every industry, starting from saloons till mission to other planets..

Needless to say what qualities a testing / qualification of a product needs. But, ultimately none of the jobs are gender specific.
